What it is for

The guiding motto of this sensor could be summed up as "slimmer, more accurate, safer" — and every one of those words is backed by the design. Nextriv Sense Essential was engineered for places where temperature measurement directly touches people's health: restaurant cold rooms, medicine warehouses, food processing plants. Hence a decision rare in this device class: an enclosure made of plastic approved for food contact (FDA-accepted materials). The sensor can sit on a shelf next to food products or medicines and raise no sanitary concerns whatsoever.
At its heart is an industrial digital sensor from a renowned Swiss manufacturer with ±0.2 °C and ±2 % RH accuracy — a class above typical building sensors. That difference shows in refrigeration: with a 2–8 °C alarm threshold, every tenth of a degree of error margin matters. The enclosure profile is only 18 mm thick, so the sensor fits where others don't — between a shelf and the chamber wall, inside a narrow refrigerated display case. The magnetic version clings to the metal wall of a fridge or freezer without drilling, and the anti-slip base makes it harder for the device to slide off and "disappear".
Where documentation continuity matters, Sense Essential plays in the top league: a local log of up to 3000 time-stamped measurements, automatic data backfill after a connectivity outage, and EN12830 certification. The electronics are additionally protected by a conformal coating — the designers declare normal operation even when the surroundings are washed down with a pressure jet.
The -30…60 °C range covers everything from a freezer room to a production hall, and long-range radio punches through cold-chamber walls to a gateway in the office — without cabling the low-temperature zones, which is usually the biggest installation cost around cold rooms. Weighing under 105 g and cable-free, relocating a measurement point is a one-minute decision, and two lithium batteries keep it running for years even at low temperatures — which is exactly where this sensor will spend its life.
Usage scenarios
- Restaurant kitchen: the magnetic version "clicks" onto a freezer wall in seconds during a break in kitchen service. From that moment every chamber reports itself, and the head chef stops keeping a paper temperature logbook.
- Pharmaceutical wholesaler: dozens of sensors in the 2–8 °C and 15–25 °C zones. The log of 3000 time-stamped measurements lets you reconstruct the full history before an inspection — including the period when the server was unavailable.
- Dairy and processing plant: a sensor in the washdown zone withstands moisture and cleaning agents (IP67 with multi-layer sealing), and the food-grade enclosure introduces no risk into the production zone.
- Grocery chain: the identical sensor in every refrigerated display case across dozens of locations; the entire chain's data in one panel, a defrost alarm before the goods go to waste.
- School and office building: the slim, discreet enclosure on a classroom or open-space wall feeds heating and ventilation automation — comfort measured where people actually sit.
- Server room: high accuracy catches a subtle temperature rise at one of the racks long before the critical threshold — time to react instead of firefighting.
Key features

- Enclosure made of plastic approved for food contact (FDA acceptance) — no sanitary concerns in food service and pharma.
- Industrial-class accuracy: ±0.2 °C and ±2 % RH — the sensor "sees" subtle changes before they become a problem.
- Only 18 mm thick — fits inside display cases, between shelves, in tight chambers.
- Two mounting versions: standard (wall/post, anti-theft screw fixing) and magnetic (metal cold-room surfaces — zero drilling).
- The magnetic version's anti-slip base makes it harder to slide off or walk away with the device.
- Log of up to 3000 time-stamped measurements + automatic backfill after a connectivity outage.
- EN12830 certification for temperature recording in refrigeration.
- IP67 sealing achieved with a multi-layer design and a sealing ring — withstands washdowns and ambient condensation.
- Electronics protected by a conformal coating — resistant to moisture and pressure washing of the surroundings.
- Contactless NFC configuration from the mobile app; power button hidden under the enclosure.
In the Nextriv system
In the cold chain, an alarm is only the start of the procedure — which is why the Nextriv platform walks every event from the threshold (two warning and two critical per metric) through acknowledgement to resolution, with an event code and team comments. Notifications arrive over six channels, and escalations make sure a night-time alarm from the freezer room doesn't wait until morning. A sensor that goes silent for twice its reporting interval immediately gets an offline status.
The documentation is rounded out by PDF reports — with statistics, percentiles and a threshold-compliance section, optionally cryptographically signed (SHA-256 + a verification QR code) — plus a calibration log with reminders of upcoming due dates. Measurement history of up to 5 years covers the requirements of most audits. XLSX/CSV export closes the HACCP reporting loop, and recipient groups route alarms to the right teams — the kitchen sees its chambers, head office sees the whole chain.
Typical deployments
- Food service: the magnetic version on a freezer wall in seconds; the end of the paper temperature logbook.
- Pharma: EN12830-compliant temperature recording, a full time-stamped history for every inspection.
- Cold storage: the whole chain's chambers and display cases in one panel, a defrost alarm before goods are written off.
- Manufacturing: halls and washdown zones — the sensor withstands moisture, cleaning agents and low-temperature duty.
