What it is for

Nextriv Sense Motion combines two of a building's senses in one very compact housing: human presence detection and ambient brightness measurement. It was created in response to the most mundane yet most expensive habit of any facility — lights and air conditioning running in empty rooms. Instead of relying on user discipline ("last one out turns off the lights"), the facility manager gets a hard, binary signal: someone is here or nobody is — and can build automation and space utilisation analytics on top of it.
This is not just another "motion detector", though. The built-in light sensor with a range of 1 to 60,000 lx — from twilight to full sun — enables smarter decisions: lighting only makes sense when someone is in the room and it is actually dark. Without that second condition, automation wastes energy on sunny days. You define the bright/dark threshold yourself, so the same sensor will behave differently in a glass-walled conference room and a windowless storeroom.
How Sense Motion "sees" matters too. Detection relies on passive infrared with a Fresnel lens — a proven, energy-efficient technique with no camera and no image recording. Zero privacy concerns: the sensor knows someone is there, but not who. That makes it possible to analyse the occupancy of desks, rooms and zones without arguments with the legal department and without unsettling employees.
The whole unit weighs 40 grams and fits within a 5 × 5 cm square. Configuration happens by tapping a phone against it (NFC), mounting means double-sided tape or two screws, and a single replaceable lithium battery lasts about 4 years. Installing it in a room takes minutes — an entire floor takes an afternoon.
Usage scenarios
- Conference room in an office building: the meeting ends at 4 p.m., the last person leaves — after a set period of no motion the lights go out, and the "empty" signal lets ventilation be scaled back. Along the way, the facility manager sees which rooms get booked "just in case" and never used.
- Corridors, restrooms and utility rooms: lights come on only with motion, and only when the light sensor reports "dark". In a facility with dozens of such zones, the difference on the bill is visible within the first month.
- Retail store: sensors in display zones detect customer presence and let you spotlight stands only when someone is actually standing at them. After closing, the same devices double as simple intrusion detection.
- School and university: classrooms and labs sit empty for whole blocks of lessons — data on actual room utilisation helps switch off lighting and plan the timetable better.
- Hotel: back-of-house areas, floor storerooms and service corridors lit only while staff are present; plus an after-hours motion signal in zones where nobody should be.
- After-hours site security: a minimalist "guard" in the archive or server room — every motion detection outside working hours generates an alert in the platform with the exact time of the event.

In the Nextriv system
Once stuck to the wall, the sensor reports itself to the platform — device auto-discovery typically takes 30 to 180 seconds and requires no manual entry of identifiers. The presence signal and bright/dark status land straight on dashboards, where nearly 20 widget types are available: from simple status tiles, through trend charts, to sensor tables and an offline device list. An "after-hours motion" rule sends a notification through any of six channels — e-mail, SMS, web push, MS Teams, Discord or an audible alarm in the app — while the webhooks integration forwards the event to the customer's own system.
Every alarm event gets a readable code, a status (active → acknowledged → resolved) and room for comments, so a night-time incident can be properly accounted for in the morning. The platform also watches the sensor itself: if it stops reporting for twice its interval, an offline alert appears. Over time, the measurement history builds a map of space utilisation that can be exported to PDF reports and XLSX/CSV files.
